Sherpa Outdoor – Swiss outdoor clothing company

A glimpse of our fashion photo shoot on location in Scotland, for the Sherpa Outdoor clothing company.

This was a shoot for Sherpa, a Swiss outdoor clothing company. The account executive who commissioned me explained that Sherpa wanted an outdoor, rugged look for their new website and printed material. The brief was to photograph landscapes, incorporating the models in a subtle way.

Dunkeld and Perth were chosen as the ideal locations as they fitted the bill perfectly. They would be easy to access, too.

The shoot included a couple of children as well (not shown in images for obvious reasons). That involved having to adapt our shooting style and manner. Saying that, being professional models, the children behaved fantastically well and were a joy to work with – better than some adults I’ve worked with! Language was also a slight problem, but luckily the agency sent along a designer to the shoot who had a good grasp of German, so any tricky situations with misunderstandings to do with language could be quickly resolved. It also helped that the Marketing Director and stylist from Sherpa who had flown over for the photoshoot spoke good English. There were a lot of clothing changes, so we had to work fast – no time for lunch!

Apart from finding out I had a hole in my wellies while shooting at the riverside, the shoot went extremely smoothly. The last shot of the day involved the two models looking out over a valley. This was at the top of a very steep hill just outside Perth and at the end of a long mile hike – and with all the gear and tripod, quite an undertaking!

The hardest bit was to convince our models to take up a safe position that appears to be close to a steep drop, as one of them had a real fear of heights! This took some very gentle and considerate persuasion. Saying that, I did understand what they meant, even my safe perch gave me vertigo looking at the views.
