Richard Campbell, our CPN member in central Scotland, was tasked of producing a comprehensive case study of the various types of clients that SPIE work with in Scotland.
To ensure that this case study was effective in showcasing SPIE’s projects in Scotland, the CPN had been working closely with the company for several years. This collaboration resulted in a commercial photography shoot that was aimed at visually documenting the different types of clients that SPIE provided building services to in central Scotland, specifically Glasgow, Motherwell, and Coatbridge. In this location shoot, services included maintenance and installation of CCTV.

This was shot in an industrial estate which wasn’t very attractive so I threw the background out of focus to help concentrate the attention on the SPIE staff member.
Commercial photography can be a challenging task, particularly when you are working in environments that may not be immediately photogenic. In some cases, such as service cupboards or industrial estates where there are many distracting elements like bins and pallets lying around, framing becomes critical in producing compelling images. Additional techniques such as throwing the background out of focus can help focus attention on the SPIE staff.

Shots like this are always useful for clients who might want something slightly unusual or a little more abstract.

The lighting in this computer server room wasn’t very inspiring so I used the location flash here to add a little more interest.
To enhance the quality of the images, Richard used location flash for some of the photographs, which helped to lift them and make them stand out more.

SPIE where quite keen to highlight the work they do with North Lanarkshire Council so this was taken outside the council HQ.

As an experienced commercial photographer, Richard found that one of the fascinating things about his job is getting to see places and aspects of working life that he would not have otherwise seen. For example, he had to capture the inside of a control room where all the CCTV cameras for the whole area were being monitored. For security reasons, he had to throw the TV screens out of focus and make sure that the SPIE staff could not be identified in the images.

As well as specific case study images, SPIE also wanted some more generic images which could be added to their photo library for use in other applications.
We’re always happy to get good feedback from clients: ‘Thank you for doing the shoot, the pictures look great!’ David Arnold – SPIE UK
