You might think that the Commercial Photographers Network’s members were all either sitting at home or tidying their studios during the Coronavirus lockdown but product photography is the one type of photography which is unaffected by this as it can be conducted alone without having to meet anyone face to face.

Many of the Commercial Photographers Network’s members are currently engaged in product photography throughout the UK from Poole on the South Coast of England right up to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

Richard Campbell is based in Glasgow and used his own house to create some lifestyle shots.

Glasgow member Richard Campbell of Blink Imaging has just completed product photography for a range of lighting and homeware products for an Edinburgh based company, all done during the lockdown.

The majority of the photography could be done isolated in the studio but the client also wanted some lifestyle shots to show the products in use, which presented some challenges.

Usually this would have involved having to source some locations but as this wasn’t possible he decided to use his own house as a background for some of the shots.

Interior photograph of antiques showroom with colourful chairs

Interior photography is very easy to carry out when premises are closed such as this antiques showroom which Dave Burrows photographed near Manchester.

Other types of photography which can safely be carried out, are interior photography and certain types of architectural exteriors where there is clear social distancing. CPN member for Manchester Dave Burrows was approached by a client who wanted shots of their antiques showroom.

Although it wasn’t able to open to the public, the client still required shots for the website which also generated business through online sales. Dave also specialises in Aerial Mast photography which allowed him take some elevated shots of the exterior.

Dundee and North East member Eddie Philips is currently planning a food photography shoot on location in Dundee. He will be working with a food stylist, so in order to comply with social distancing, the stylist will be preparing the food in another part of the house and then leaving it for him to photograph in a separate room.

It’s important that we all keep safe and follow the social distancing rules in order to help the NHS and save lives but with a bit of careful planning it is still possible to carry out certain types of photography.
