In our latest blog Simon discusses a pre-covid advertising photoshoot of athletes for the University of Brighton.
The brief for the campaign was to create captivating and motivational posters to inspire fans and antagonise the opposition. Each year the University of Brighton challenges the University of Sussex across 18 sporting fixtures for the Varsity Challenge Cup. These bitter rivals leave no stone unturned in their quest to crush the opposition. In short – they hate each other! The photos therefore had to follow in these footsteps and be better than anything the University of Sussex could produce.

During the pre-shoot meeting in Brighton, Simon and the client spent time working through the style and tone of the advertising photography. With a marketing strategy already in place, the photographs needed to fit in with current collateral around the athlete’s university ethos. Key words like inspire and intimidate set the tone.

The exact key words that we settled on to set the style were Intimidation, through expression and ‘You? You’re beneath me’. This in turn inspired the photography direction which needed to have edgy lighting and clean, stylised editing. We chose the captains and co-captains to be photographed as they were the leaders.
