Every year the Commercial Photographers Network carries out case study photography for a number of clients all over the UK. Recently, we were approached to do a case study of furniture and fittings which had been installed by a furniture manufacturer at some new student accommodation in Edinburgh.
The Commercial Photographers Network is a co-operative made up of 18 photographers covering the whole of the UK. It helps clients by putting them in touch with an experienced photographer close to the location of their shoot, so Richard Campbell who covers Edinburgh and Glasgow for the CPN was assigned to carry out the work.
It was impossible to eliminate the reflections of the lights in the glass partition so I had to shoot this element separate and then add it back in in post production.
The client needed a range of shots of the furniture and fittings in situ, as well as some wider shots to show the whole project in context. As commercial photographers we all carry portable lighting for photographing interiors which is often necessary to help balance out the lighting and eliminate strong colour casts which can be produced by different lighting sources.

The other important pieces of equipment that all the members carry are of course professional cameras and lenses. The correct lenses are particularly important for interiors, especially ones wide enough to record the whole room. The final piece of jigsaw is the post production which usually involves some retouching. For this shoot, the main challenge was that the rooms had very large glass windows which made it impossible to completely eliminate reflections from the lighting. The windows therefore had to be photographed separately without a reflection and then addd back in in post production.
