In our latest blog, our South London advertising photographer Simon Callaghan discusses his product launch photo shoot with Acoustiguide, a French company who design and manufacture the devices we all listen to on museum & heritage tours.
This was simultaneously the most exciting and frustrating photo shoot to date. It was exciting as we had unlimited access passes to the Roman Baths and Stonehenge. We could go anywhere, photograph anything, even get up close ups of the stones, which was a photographer’s dream! Unfortunately, the entire day was beset with thunderous rainstorms which meant access to Stonehenge was closed. Not even employees were allowed near it.
Lighting was kept to a minimum to give the shots a natural feel.
With our meticulously planned shot list now in the bin, I was forced to think on the spot: new locations, new poses, new plans for when and where to use each outfit. I also had to work out how to make the most of our time, how long to spend in each area and how to keep a crew of four happy and warm.
Problem solving on the spot is where experienced advertising photographers like the CPN really earn their money. Where we have the unexpected thrown at us, we take it all in our stride, and get to work.
The Roman Baths were used as a location for the shoot.
We split each location into three zones. The marketing manager and I would spend time scouting each zone, making sure each photograph we planned showed the product in a new way.
We made the most of colour matching on location; trying to find colours in the scene that matched or complemented the branding colours.
A number of shots were taken showing the device in use.
Our model nailed every look we gave her. We wanted the range of emotions, while using this device, to come through: discovery, intrigue, shock, pleasure and she was perfectly cast. If I can make one recommendation, always hire a model. Models know how to pose, understand what you’re looking for and have a really undervalued skill set. It was also important to show the branding in a number of shots.
