Tintypes are produced by a process invented in 1851 by Mr Frederic Archer called The Wetplate Collodion Process.
Using metal coated in Collodion, dipped in Silver Nitrate and placed in a large plate camera, Carl Wilson has produced many unique tintypes using this fascinating and tricky process.
The process was used to document the American Civil war with photographers using portable darkrooms on horse drawn carts. It was superseded by the dry plate process in the 1870s but continued as a novelty into the early 1900s.
It’s great to get back to the basics and spend the time creating one unique image!
