Have you ever wondered what it takes to produce photography in an industrial location?
Industrial locations vary greatly ranging from super clean electronics rooms, and precision product manufacturing at one end of the scale, to heavy industry at the other, each presenting different challenges to capture great images of the client’s products, places, and people.
Carload of lighting and camera equipment
Often, in clean areas, the quantity of photographic equipment to be used on the shoot must be minimized and wiped down before entering to reduce contamination risks. Though the task may seem challenging, with creativity and portable lighting, even manufacturing machinery can be transformed into eye-catching images.
On location setting up the photography
Recently, Commercial Photographers Network member Simon Vine Photography was asked by his client Green Eco Technologies to photograph their latest WasteMaster food waste conversion systems at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing site in Lancashire.
Images captured tethered from the camera direct to a laptop for instant review
The impressive systems required a carload of photography kit, with up to five lights to capture features from different angles, including some detail shots. The images were sent instantly to a laptop for instant review by the client and to help make final adjustments to the lighting. The WasteMaster food waste processing machines were pristine and brand new, so there was no need to hide imperfections, but the chrome and steel shiny surfaces presented a few challenges, which were overcome with careful lighting and carefully chosen angles.

Where there are backgrounds behind products or machines at a location, these can be removed, to provide cleaner shots that can be used in marketing materials.
Health and safety have always been taken seriously whilst on location and given the current situation with additional social distancing, the location’s precautions should be discussed before travelling to carry out photography.
