Based near Dundee, Commercial Photographers Network member Eddie Philips has a great deal of experience with food and product photography. In our latest blog, he tells us about a recent commercial product shoot for anCnoc whisky.
anCnoc whisky recently asked a design company I work with to organise lifestyle and product photography for their range of whiskies. For the shoot we used the fabulous Cromlix Hotel near Dunblane and hired Sam, a professional model from London. Sam had just the look anCnoc were after. He also had a great deal of experience with product photography shoots which made my job a lot easier. Having done countless photo-shoots, Sam knew exactly where to stand in relation to my lights and also when and how to move between exposures. This allowed me to concentrate on the images and the product, rather than spending precious shooting time directing him how to stand or hold the product.
All the images required a careful balance of studio and ambient lighting to create the right atmosphere.
As a commercial food and product photographer near Dundee in the North East of Scotland, I have years of experience knowing what shots will work and also what doesn’t. I also use professional cameras, which bring high quality resolution and a range of lenses which provide the optimal focal length for the shots required.
The campaign had a Xmas theme but we wanted to keep this as subtle as possible.
Lighting for location product photography is critical, not only for the type, direction and quality but also the balance between the studio lights and the ambient lighting. This is essential to make sure the studio lighting doesn’t overpower and ruin the atmosphere of the shot.
These kind of shots are never as easy as they appear. It takes a lot of experience and effort to create natural looking images.
On this shoot, I used a studio flash with a softbox attachment that reduced the spread of the light so I could direct the light on Sam and leave the rest of the room virtually unaffected.
