Our members have undertaken a number of challenging and interesting shoots over the years.
Here’s just a small selection.

I had a couple of interesting jobs recently; one was for Fugro Offshore Hydrographic Surveying. (www.fugro.com) Fugro are a huge organisation with different companies all over the globe. My task was to rendezvous by helicopter in the channel at 7.30am,with one of their vessels. A twin engined Augusta 109 had to be chartered (twin engined as it was over the ocean) and we were commissioned to take the shots with land in the background.

For this we were to fly to the Lizard Peninsula from Liskeard, the excellent Cornish base of Castle air - remember Anneke Rice and Treasure Hunt or The Flying Gardener?

We were to land on the Lizard, take the door off ready for photography and then rendezvous off the Lizard. The only problem was the captain radioed to say that the trip from Rotterdam to Liverpool was behind schedule due to heavy tides in the channel. The decision for me was do we take off now and meet mid channel (it was pouring with rain and the shots were needed in good weather), or do we wait 2 hrs and meet up later? The helicopter was very expensive with the pilot waiting.

I decided I had coastline images that I could drop in if necessary and decided to fly through the rain to mid channel. Bingo! The weather brightened and we got fabulous images from the all-powerful 109 with me using the 1DS Mk11. Sean Connery eat your heart out. The client was delighted with the low angle swoop shots, which had added drama from sun backlighting the vessel. Having the skill to know when the vessel looks 'right' in the water and understanding the need to communicate with the vessel so that the captain knows and understands what is happening are all vital elements when it comes to professional photography. I was back on terra firma at 8am to begin a day's work at the studio with hundreds of lovely Raws!!!

I had a recent cracking job for Channel 5 photographing the presenters of The Gadget Show and not only that, I appeared on the show shooting Jon and the delectable Suzi Perry.

The commentary stated that when they wanted to road test the latest Nikons they got in touch with Top Photographer Graham Oakes. That’s good enough for me!

David Hathaway Transport (www.davidhathaway.co.uk) is one of the country's leading independent distribution and warehousing companies and operates nearly 50 vehicles. Hathaways wanted to update their brand and online presence with a new website and a new stock library of photography. Having researched a number of photographers and web companies, Hathaways commissioned me to not only deliver the imagery but also the design, navigation, functionality and build of the website.

I worked closely with the Marketing Director, carefully planning key shots and scheduling shoots around the business so as to minimise any disruption. Hathaways wanted a fresh, clean look for the photography with simple and intuitive navigation throughout the website.

The imagery needed to be clear, obvious, colourful and dynamic, whilst appealing to the company's customer demographic.

My approach was to look at all aspects of the business and it's day-to-day activities, focusing on detail as well as action. Some of the subject matter required lighting on location whilst available light was used for the majority of the work. The net result is a well balanced website with a natural look and feel, which is also enjoyable to navigate.

I was hired by NATO to be the only photographer to cover a private meeting between President Karzai of Afghanistan and Lord Robertson near Inverness in Sept 2003.

The President was having a short break in the Highlands on route from New York to Afghanistan. I was sworn to secrecy re the time and location of the meeting and it felt like walking on to the set of a James Bond film! The images were supplied immediately to the NATO press office and were available world wide to the press for use.

Lord Robertson commented that I was probably more used to photographing wildlife than heads of state up here in the highlands but of course being such a beautiful part of the UK, we get many senior Royal and political figures visiting the area.

The ancient celtic sport of Shinty, which is a forerunner of golf and seen by some as hockey gone mad is a highly skilled ball and stick sport played in Scotland. It is amateur but attracts many interesting characters. In its organised form it recently celebrated its 100th Scottish cup final. I used this as a platform to photograph 100 faces of people at the 100th final. By setting up a small studio at the stadium, I invited 100 people on the day to participate in the project. I gained access to players, managers, previous heroes of the sport, children, crowd members, Charles Kennedy MP who is a keen fan of his home team in Fort William and even an Australian who was at his first ever match!

Although this was a personal project, it has led to an exhibition and a recent TV interview for a documentary on the sport where some of the images will be used.
